How much should a solicitor charge for a will?
There is no government-set price for an ordinary will. Compare the total written price for the same scope, not the cheapest headline. Complexity, tax advice, trusts, businesses and family circumstances can change the work involved.
Why headline prices can mislead
A low price may apply only to a basic will and exclude VAT, advice, trust wording, property ownership work or a second person's will. A higher quote may include a qualified adviser's time and a proper review. Give each provider the same written brief.
What the quote should explain
Ask for scope as well as price.
- Who advises and drafts?
- What fact-finding and tax discussion is included?
- Is the fee fixed and VAT-inclusive?
- How is signing checked?
- Where is the original stored?
- Are there executor or trust charges?
- What is the correction and complaint process?
When paying more makes sense
Professional judgement is particularly valuable for blended families, unmarried partners, vulnerable beneficiaries, foreign assets, businesses, farms, disputes, trusts and estates with significant tax exposure.
