Plain-English answer · England and Wales
How much does a lasting power of attorney cost?
The Office of the Public Guardian currently charges £92 to register each LPA in England and Wales. Registering both types for one person costs £184 before any professional fee. A reduction or exemption may be available depending on the donor's finances.
The official cost
The registration fee applies to each document. A couple each making both types would submit four applications. The £92 fee applies to applications received from 17 November 2025. Check the official page before paying because fees can change.
Why professional prices differ
A quote may cover form filling only, or it may include legal advice, tailored drafting, certificate-provider work, supervised signing and registration.
- Check whether OPG fees and VAT are included.
- Ask who checks the final wording.
- Ask what happens if a form is rejected.
- Check whether tailored instructions cost extra.
Compare scope, not just price
Ask each provider for one written total and a clear list of what they will do. A higher fee can be justified where real legal judgement is needed. It is harder to justify where the service merely transfers your answers into a free government form without explaining that option.
